2006/04/05 With the introduction of PHP 5 in the Gentoo portage system the package structure for PHP was changed so that both PHP4 and PHP5 can coexist on the same system. Because of a number of incompatibilities between we'll stick with 4 for now, but I had to re-install php4 because gentoo moved things around for php4 as well. I put some real effort in keeping the config accurate, but if you notice some breakage, please notify .

details:
dev-php/php and dev-php/mod_php moved to a single package dev-lang/php
there were changes in the include dirs, merged both versions
extensions moved from /usr/lib/php/extensions to /usr/lib/php4/lib/php/extensions (who invented this path?)
had to explicitly enable xsl and java USE flags. The old package somehow got these extensions, but I could not find out how these were enabled
